The TASCAM Portastudio was the world’s first four-track recorder based on a standard compact audio cassette tape. This model 464 is one of the most impressive decks from Tascam, with considerably better build quality and reliability than the 424MKIII. In fact, we refuse to sell it, or the 424 MK1, as the quality on those decks were so bad that we are not comfortable selling them to our customers! Instead we recommend this 464, or the 424 MKII, as far superior alternatives.The term Portastudio is exclusive to Teac, however it is generally used to describe all self-contained cassette-based multi-track recorders dedicated to music production. In addition to being biased for Chrome Type II tapes, the 464 has more professional features you need, like DBX Noise Reduction, Pitch Control, 4 Balanced XLR Inputs with Phantom Power, and the highly desired 4-Track Direct Outs for downloading to your DAW or PC! To increase the quality of the recording, in addition to normal speed, the 464 uses high-speed recording, 3-3/4 ips, twice the normal speed of a standard audio cassette. The recorder has 12 channels, 4 mono & 4 stereo, that can record to 4 tracks at one time using 4 group outs. This is a 120V AC, 60 Hz unit designed for US use and includes the attached AC cord. With nice, sharp corners to the cabinet and feet, if it weren’t for a few minor scuffs & dings we would have had no problem calling this « Mint! » The original Owner’s Manual does show a little use, some creasing and a stain to the front cover. The factory box has custom Styrofoam packaging and shows significant wear as seen in the pics. Please inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition. Service:This transport on this deck was not working, but we always give these decks a full refurb so it goes to our tech either way. So why refurbish a deck with such little use? Even if never used the belts deteriorate, the lube turns to glue and the « C Gear » deteriorates, so we always do a full refurb no mater how much use these decks have. Good thing too, in addition to a bad belt, the « C Gear » in the cassette drive appeared good, but it easily snapped in half when it was removed! So it was replaced with a real, injection-molded gear, not made on a 3-D printer in someone’s basement. It features a built in mixer with three bands of EQ on each channel, XLR inputs on channels 1-4, and 1/4″ inputs for the other inputs. It can record on up to 4 tracks simultaneously. The manual is easy to follow, it is very easy to master after running through the operations a few times. The 464 has a pitch wheel to change the speed/pitch, two computer controlled memory locations with auto-punch in, a return to zero locate button, two loops for effect and auxiliary, an option to record a SMPTE track on track 4, and dbx Type II noise reduction.
