Released in 1972, the SX-828 is a big power AM/FM stereo receiver with advanced circuit design, outstanding FM selectivity and sensitivity, and linear scale tuning dial. It retailed for a whopping $470, that’s almost $3,500 today!Here, in one of Pioneer’s most prized packages, is a wealth of outstanding performance in an AM/FM solid state stereo receiver.The SX-828 is another in the long, proud line of advanced stereo components from Pioneer – and certainly one of the best. For music power that will fill any-sized room with clear, rich sound, the SX-828 features up to 270 watts (at 4 ohms). For FM selectivity and sensitivity that has no peer in a unit of this size, the unit features a large linear scale tuning dial, the latest solid state circuitry, and a pair of FM tuning meters. And, finally, for the supreme versatility that is so necessary to quality hi-fi today, it provides two tape monitor circuits for tape-to-tape duplication, and lets you use up to two turntables, three sets of speaker systems, two microphones and even too sets of headphones. All in one handsomely-designed, ruggedly built unit from the quality stereo people at Pioneer. This classic receiver has three speaker zones, two 1/4″ Headphone jacks & two Mic jacks on the front panel along with lighted function indicators. The tuning dial is complemented with a Stereo indicator lamp and both Signal & Tuning meters. In addition to the Speaker, Function and Stereo Mode selectors, and Volume, Balance, and click-stop Bass & Treble controls, there are buttons for FM Muting and Dial Dimmer and switches for Low & High Filters, Audio Muting, Tape Monitors and a Loudness switch that contours the sound perfectly for low level listening. It also has direct access to Pre-Out & Main In through the rear panel, so you can choose to add any number of components to upgrade your system, from a Graphic Equalizer to electronic crossovers for multi-amplification networks. While the manual gives this a « Music Power » rating of 270W @4Ω, we prefer to use the more accurate « Continuous Power » rating of 108 Watts, or 54 W/Ch into 8Ω through full spectrum and both channels fully driven. It has an impressive Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 0.5%, but bring down the power to 35 W/Ch for a remarkable 0.03% THD, far below what the human ear can detect! Remember, these are what audiophiles call « Vintage Watts, » from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings!The front panel has dual 1/4″ Headphone & dual Mic jacks, while the rear panel offers three speaker zones, an Aux Input, two Tape Loops, one with the PLAY/REC DIN jack found in the higher-end offerings of the era, and two stereo Phono Inputs with a grounding post for your turntables! It also has three AC outlets, two unswitched & one switched and a power fuse with voltage adjustment for foreign use. It weighs in at just under 33 lbs and measures 14-3/4″ x 5-15/16″ x 19-1/8″ wide! Condition:This rare receiver is in « Very Good » condition with minor signs of use and a nice, bright dial! With a nice, clean front panel, the only thing worth mentioning is just a few scuffs & dings to the veneer, most too faint to make out in the pics. This unit came to us with some fading to the lid, so we gave it a light sanding and applied a new coat of Golden Oak stain which turned out very nicely as seen in the pics. All the original knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AM Antenna & AC cord. The manual has gone missing, but no worries, it’s available online or we will send you the PDF file directly on request. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is included. Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.Service:On inspection, this unit was working with some scratchy controls, some distortion to the right channel and a dim dial, so as with all vintage receivers it went to our tech for servicing. First, Pioneer used certain transistors throughout this model that have known issues after 40 years, so whether or not they are still working, our tech insists on replacing these transistors as they will assuredly fail some time in the near future. In fact, replacement of these transistors cleared up the distortion issue.While our tech does not believe in doing a « shotgun » style « re-cap » on most gear made from the late ’70’s on, he does make sure there are no capacitors with detectable or known issues. Pioneer used blue Sanyo electrolytic capacitors throughout this model that are notorious for breaking down, so every one was upgraded along with all those in the power supply and several others that showed signs of overheating. Also, the power supply transistor heat-sinks were secured and new compound applied! A total of 18 transistors and 22 electrolytic capacitors were upgraded to brand new. high quality parts from Onsemi, Nichicon, Rubycon, etc., no used or NOS components! It’s this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!Only a few lamps were still working, but as they were most likely going to fail soon all the lamps were replaced with long-life LED’s! We installed the new frosted Cool White LED’s in the dial which shine through the blue dial with better consistently, then Green LEDs were chosen for the meters that contrast the dial beautifully. But if you prefer the original Warm White meter color that shines through blue just let us know BEFORE buying or sending an offer and we will switch it out for you free of charge! Even the hard to replace pointer lamp and all ten of the indicator lamps were also upgraded so you won’t have to worry about them either. In fact, we weren’t happy with the lack of illumination the unidirectional LED’s give on these pointers, others just resort to using an incandescent. But as longevity is the whole idea behind the LED upgrade, our tech has come up with a custom way to install a 1-segment LED that illuminates the pointer much better. All vintage receivers receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacementThe exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailedWhile the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced. All switches & pots are cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatibleAny faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc., are replacedAll PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowedAll electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). We are in a remote area, still we were able to pull in all our local FM stations with the included wire antenna, activating the tuning meter and lighting the Stereo lamp.
