ADDRESS꞉ 88-90-92 West Jackson Blvd., (AND 69, 71, 73 and 75 West Jackson Blvd.; AND 1760 East Ravenswood Park [in 1909]; AND 555 West Jackson Blvd., [from 1902 to 1905]; AND later, 5235 North Ravenswood Avenue). PRODUCTS PURCHASED꞉ Six #99 « Hercules » 4-bar, 1600-ohm crank / magneto wooden wall phones with handset, two bells, writing area, mouthpiece and DC battery compartment. These were likely used for communications between the office and the mine. VALUE OF GOODS꞉ $66.00 SHIPPED BY: C. M. & St. P. (Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad). HOLES, TEARS, DAMAGE꞉ Slight damage across the back of the invoice along the top (where it appears to have been glued to another document or its carbon copy). Two holes punched at the top of the invoice where it was “posted.” ADDITIONAL NOTES꞉ During our research, we discovered a lot of information on both companies. But what we did not find was any other invoices from the Swedish-American Telephone Company. ABOUT THE SWEDISH-AMERICAN TELEPHONE COMPANY꞉ Early telephones benefited from any association with Swedish expertise. Inasmuch, when the Swedish-American Telephone Company was founded in 1899, its name was more strategic than it was self descriptive. The company manufactured telephones and components for railroads, factories, warehouses, offices, stores, residences, stables, etc. A fourth generation American of German ancestry, SATC’s first president was Ellsworth B. Overshiner. For the four years prior, the 32 year-old had been in business with his father James Overshiner (a former wagon manufacturer) running the Elwood Telephone Company in central Indiana. There, Ellsworth gained hands-on experience building phone components as well as the actual network systems themselves. “Our immense plant in Chicago employs only the most modern methods of manufacture known,” the Swedish-American Telephone Company declared in a 1908 edition of its self-published magazine, Rural Telephone. “Located, as we are, in a field like Chicago, we are enabled to select our skilled mechanics, specialists and experts from a vast array of the finest talent in the world. Labor of this kind may cost a trifle more than it does in small towns, but it proves vastly more satisfactory in the end.” Originally located at 88-90-92 West Jackson Boulevard, the company relocated just west of Andersonville’s main Clark Street, at the corner of Farragut and North Ravenswood into an “immense” factory space. Ravenswood became the Swedish-American Telephone Company’s home from 1905 to 1923. Upon closing, their building became home to the Denoyer-Geppert Company, a map and globe maker. ABOUT THE BALTIC MINING COMPANY꞉ Our research determined The Baltic Mining Company was organized in 1897 and was actually producing three years later. In 1900, were the mine was located, was actually wilderness but quickly became a prosperous mining town. The company’s holdings comprised a tract of approximately 900 acres. According to the “Mine Inspector’s Report for Houghton County, Michigan For the Year Ending September 30, 1898,” the Baltic Mine only suffered one fatality the previous year. On March 11, 1897, Henry Bridgman, a miner, died after being struck by a desending [sic] cage / skip in the No. 1 shaft due to a mistake made by an engineer operating the lift. According to the 1911 edition of the Mining Properties of Michigan by the State Board of Tax Commissioners, the Baltic Mine was a cooper mine owned by the Copper Range Consolidated and valued at $5,000,000 in 1911. The Baltic Lode was opened up around 1897 and four mines were situated upon that load (The Superior, Baltic, Tri-Mountain and Champion). According to “A History of the Northern Peninsula of Michigan and Its People, Its Mining, Lumber and Agricultural Industries, Volume 1”, 1911 (by Alvah L.
